Sedation Matters - Conscious Sedation, is a comprehensive training programme aligned to the Sedation 101: Monitoring the Sedated Patient course.
Developed in accordance with the Dental Council of New Zealand (DCNZ) Sedation Practice Standard, Standards 15–17, this course equips dental teams in private practice, hospitals, and community settings with the essential skills to safely and confidently monitor patients undergoing sedation. (Equivalent to the Sedation 101: Monitoring the Sedated Patient course)
Through a blend of evidence-based education, practical demonstrations, and scenario-based learning, participants gain a deep understanding of their responsibilities within the sedation process. The course focuses on early recognition of deterioration, safe monitoring techniques, and effective emergency responses—ensuring every patient receives the highest standard of care.
Important Note:
Sedation Matters does not teach the administration of sedation.
Its purpose is to develop certified competency in sedation monitoring, recognising complications early and responding appropriately to ensure safe and compliant practice.

This course is designed for dental professionals who play an active role in providing care to sedated patients, including:
Dental assistants and nurses supporting sedated procedures
Dentists using oral or IV sedation as part of their clinical practice

Monitoring Sedated Patients
Recognising key physical and physiological signs
Appropriate use of monitoring equipment (including capnography, pulse oximetry, ECG, and BP monitoring)
Identifying abnormalities and escalating concerns promptly to the sedationist
Emergency Response
Recognising early signs of complications
Responding to medical emergencies in sedated patients
Working effectively as part of a sedation team

Written quiz (MCQ) based on workbook and theory session
