Advanced Life Support for Health Care Professioanls - Certified Resuscitation Course.
This Advanced course is designed for health professionals, and endorsed by the The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners, Royal New Zealand College of Urgent Care and offered to The New Zealand Dental Association Members. Delivered through immersive simulation and hands-on training, this course equips clinicians to lead and respond effectively in life-threatening emergencies.
Target Audience
The Advanced course is specifically tailored for:
Registered healthcare professionals working in acute care environments such as:
Emergency departments
Operating theatres
Intensive care units
Inpatient wards
Doctors, dentists, nurses, paramedics, and anaesthetic technicians
Those expected to lead or be part of a resuscitation team
Professionals requiring compliance with employer or professional body resuscitation standards
Participants are expected to have prior basic life support (BLS) knowledge and experience and should be comfortable with basic ECG interpretation and clinical decision-making under pressure.
Course Curriculum
Principles of advanced life support
Recognition and management of the deteriorating patient
Causes and management of cardiac arrest (4 Hs and 4 Ts)
Post-resuscitation care
Ethical and cultural considerations in resuscitation (including Te Tiriti o Waitangi implications)
Practical Skills
Airway management (basic to advanced techniques)
Manual defibrillation and ECG rhythm recognition
High-quality CPR and use of resuscitation equipment
Safe use of emergency medications in resuscitation
Intravenous/intraosseous access
Simulation and Teamwork
Team-based resuscitation simulations
Leadership and role allocation in emergencies
Communication under pressure (e.g., SBARR)
Closed-loop communication and crew resource management (CRM)
Assessment Components
Written theory examination
Rhythm recognition test
Practical skills assessment (e.g., airway, defibrillation)
Simulated cardiac arrest team scenario (final summative assessment)
Course Requirements
This course includes both theory and practical assessment.
